The Modern Cannabis Brand Does Not Need More Followers. It Needs Distribution.

Follower count is the metric brands ask about and the one that predicts least. Here is what to build instead, and why it is a fundamentally different asset.

Almost every cannabis brand we talk to opens with a follower number. Theirs, or a competitor's. It is the metric the industry has agreed to care about, and on its own it is close to useless.

Followers are a permission, not a channel

A follower means someone once decided they were willing to hear from you. On a subscription feed that would be a channel. On an algorithmic feed it is a weak signal among many, and organic reach to your own followers has been declining for years across every major platform.

The practical test: if you post tomorrow, what percentage of your followers see it? For most brand accounts the honest answer is single digits.

An audience you cannot reach is a number, not an asset.

## What distribution actually means

Distribution is the ability to put something in front of relevant people, on demand, without paying for the privilege each time. It takes a few forms:

  • Owned pages with genuine audiences, which you control entirely
  • Partner networks that will carry a campaign because the relationship is real
  • Creator relationships where the creator's audience trusts them
  • Community placements inside conversations already happening

The difference from followers is that these compound and they are portable. A platform change damages a follower count. It damages a network far less, because a network is several relationships rather than one algorithm.

1.48M
followers on the flagship page we built and own
100M+
organic impressions all time across client accounts we run
500K+
link clicks driven to client sites
## Why brands build the wrong one

Because followers are legible and distribution is not. A follower count fits in a board deck. "We have relationships with eleven pages that will carry a launch" does not, even though it is worth considerably more.

There is also a timing problem. Buying followers produces a number this quarter. Building distribution produces nothing visible for months and then produces everything.

## Where to start

You do not need a 1.48M-follower page. You need to stop treating follower growth as the goal and start treating reachability as the goal.

Concretely: build one owned property genuinely worth following, form three real relationships with pages your audience already reads, and get an email list you control. That is unglamorous and it will outlast every algorithm change coming.
